On September 15, 2024, severe flooding struck Lower Austria and Vienna after days of torrential rainfall, causing widespread disruption and damage. Authorities declared Lower Austria a disaster zone as rivers surged and overwhelmed infrastructure, leading to the evacuation of over 1,100 homes. A firefighter tragically lost his life while attempting to pump water from a basement in Lower Austria, where emergency teams responded to thousands of calls for help. Several village villages were submerged, with officials describing the scene as a “lakescape.”
In Vienna, the Wien River overflowed its banks, leading to significant flooding in parts of the city. Homes near the river were evacuated, and public transport was heavily impacted, with subway lines U3, U4, and U6 disrupted due to water damage. The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) also suspended several train services, particularly on lines south of the Danube. Residents were advised to avoid non-essential travel as emergency services continued to work around the clock to control the situation.
The heavy rains are expected to persist until at least Monday evening, exacerbating concerns about further flooding and landslides across the region. As a precaution, all major public events were cancelled.
